Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about sober living at By the Sea Recovery. Still have questions? Call us any time at 760-216-2077.
What is a sober living home?
Sober living is structured, substance-free housing that helps people practice accountability and independence during recovery. Residents live in a shared home, follow clear rules, participate in recovery activities, and rebuild everyday responsibilities without receiving clinical treatment inside the house. By the Sea Recovery provides structured sober living for adult men in San Marcos, with routine, testing, meetings, work or approved daytime activity, communication, and shared accountability. Unlike inpatient treatment centers, sober living homes are not treatment facilities — they are structured housing environments that bridge the gap between residential treatment and independent living.
How long should someone stay in sober living?
Residents commit to a minimum stay of 90 days. Most men stay about four months, giving them time to settle into the structure, build healthy routines, work, attend meetings, and practice daily recovery responsibilities.
How much does sober living cost in San Diego?
Sober living costs in San Diego vary by location, room type, staffing, structure, amenities, and services. Current BTS monthly pricing is $1,350–$2,000, depending on the room arrangement and approved support. Required and conditional fees are explained before move-in. Call 760-216-2077 to review pricing and availability.
What are the house rules at By the Sea Recovery?
Common sober living rules at By the Sea Recovery include remaining substance-free, participating in drug and alcohol testing at any time, following curfew, attending a minimum of 3 recovery meetings per week, communicating schedule changes, completing assigned household chores, respecting other residents and staff, and maintaining work, school, or an approved daytime structure. Rules are explained clearly before move-in so residents and families understand the commitment. The full rule list is reviewed and signed at intake.
What does a typical day look like at By the Sea Recovery?
A typical day at By the Sea Recovery includes morning preparation, work or school, recovery meetings, exercise, appointments, chores, meals, house communication, and curfew. The schedule is designed to resemble healthy independent living while keeping accountability in place. A typical weekday includes: early morning routine (personal hygiene, breakfast, meditation or journaling), morning accountability check-in with house management, departure for work, school, or outside appointments, recovery support, afternoon return and free time, evening dinner and preparation, recovery meeting (AA, NA, or equivalent, at least 3–5 per week), evening structure (house meetings, step work, community activities), and curfew. Weekends typically include community activities, beach visits, hiking, gym sessions, and social recovery events.
Who is sober living for?
By the Sea Recovery is Structured Sober Living for men who are ready to live in a substance-free home and follow the structure of the house. We are not a detox or treatment center, and we do not provide therapy, medical care, psychiatric care, or crisis services. If someone needs clinical care, it must be handled by an independent licensed provider. By the Sea Recovery serves adult men who are ready to rebuild routine, responsibility, and recovery momentum in a shared home.
Am I required to work or attend school?
Every resident is expected to maintain a purposeful weekly routine. Depending on his circumstances, that may include employment, active job search, school, separately arranged treatment, or another approved daytime activity. We discuss the plan individually. Chores, meetings, testing, curfew, and accountability remain part of life at BTS.
How do I get admitted to By the Sea Recovery?
Start by calling or sending me a message so we can talk about your situation. Then come see the house. If a family member visits first, I’ll also meet and speak with the man who may live here before deciding whether BTS is the right fit. If it is a good fit and a bed is available, I’ll offer him a bed. He can take time to decide; if he accepts, we’ll set a move-in date. His place in the house begins when he arrives and completes the move-in process.
