What a Day Actually Looks Like at By the Sea Recovery

A Day in Sober Living Is Structured Real Life
A typical day in sober living is not treatment programming all day. At By the Sea Recovery, the day is built around real life with structure: waking up, communicating plans, working or looking for work, attending meetings, completing chores, eating meals, checking in, and following house expectations. The goal is to help men practice recovery in daily life, not keep them separate from it.
Sober living does not replace clinical treatment. It is what comes after — or alongside — treatment, when someone is medically stable and ready to rebuild daily life with accountability. Our daily schedule reflects that focus on real structure, not programming.
Morning: Start the Day With Direction
The morning sets the tone. At By the Sea Recovery, residents are expected to get up, get ready, and communicate their plan for the day. That is not a small thing. For many men in early recovery, simply having a consistent morning routine is new territory.
Morning responsibilities include maintaining personal space, being ready for whatever the day holds — work, meetings, appointments, job search, school — and communicating with the house about the schedule. Starting the day with intention builds the habit of accountability that carries into the rest of recovery.
Daytime: Work, School, Meetings, or Approved Structure
Many residents work, attend school, look for work, volunteer, attend recovery meetings, or handle approved responsibilities during the day. Productive structure during daytime hours is an expectation, not optional.
For residents who are employed or returning to work, the structure of sober living supports that transition. For those still building toward it, the house provides accountability around the job search process. Learn more about what working while in sober living looks like in practice.
BTS does not promise job placement or employment outcomes. What it provides is a stable, accountable environment where men can do the work of rebuilding — one day at a time.

Recovery Meetings and Outside Support
Recovery meeting attendance is part of sober living accountability at By the Sea Recovery. Meetings are not optional programming — they are a core expectation and a connection point to the broader recovery community.
Some residents also work with outside therapists, outpatient providers, medical professionals, or other support services during their time in sober living. Those services are separate from BTS sober living — BTS does not provide therapy, outpatient treatment, medical care, or clinical services. But residents may coordinate with outside or affiliated providers when appropriate and authorized.

House Responsibilities and Shared Living
Recovery is practiced in the details. At By the Sea Recovery, residents are responsible for chores, cleaning personal and shared spaces, respecting other residents, and communicating schedules clearly.
Shared living requires more than showing up. It requires contribution — doing your part, being honest when plans change, and holding to the standards that keep the home functional and safe for everyone. These responsibilities are spelled out clearly in the rules and expectations residents agree to before moving in. Responsibility is not punishment. It is recovery practice.
Evening: Connection, Accountability, and Curfew
Evenings at a sober living home are where accountability shows up most clearly. Residents may attend evening meetings, share a meal, make calls with sponsors or family, exercise, engage in recovery activity, or simply wind down. Curfew and schedule communication are expected.
Structure in the evening protects the accountability that the whole day is built on. It is not meant to feel punitive — it is meant to feel steady. Consistency is what early recovery needs most.
What Families Should Understand
Sober living is not designed to shield someone from life. It is designed to help him practice life with guardrails in place. The goal is that over time, those guardrails become internal — built into how he thinks, plans, communicates, and makes decisions.
Families watching from the outside should look for signs that matter: consistent routines, honesty, accountability, follow-through on commitments, and engagement with recovery. Those are more meaningful indicators than comfort or happiness alone. There are no outcome guarantees in sober living. What there is, at a quality home, is structure, honesty, and real accountability.
Answers to common questions from families and residents are collected in our sober living FAQ.
How By the Sea Recovery Keeps the Day Grounded
By the Sea Recovery is a small, 8-bed home in San Marcos, North County San Diego. Owner-led and staff-supported. Clear expectations. Regular drug and alcohol testing. A peer community of men who are doing the same work. A setting that is quieter than central San Diego but connected to everything residents need: work, meetings, outdoor activity, and daily life.
The program structure is built to hold residents accountable without being punitive. The size of the home matters — in a smaller house, accountability is real and relationships are genuine. There is nowhere to disappear.
Honest fit conversations happen before anyone moves in. If sober living is not the right step for someone, we will say so. Learn about admissions and cost and what the process looks like.
